In-game Description[]

"Nobody knows if Lucifer is a machine, a human or a ghost from hell. The fire of Lucifer can kill whole hordes of infected. It can not attack through walls but is immune to fire."

General Information[]

Lucifers are very short ranged and slow infantry units armed with flamethrowers, designed to clear the map quickly. The flamethrower allows them to deal sustained damage in a small cone shaped area in front of them, allowing them to deal with large numbers of Infected with small health pools simultaneously. While starting the attack takes some time, Lucifers have no reload animation and can switch between enemies instantly, wasting no time between attacks.

The Lucifer is one of four specialised units requiring Oil that can only be recruited from an Engineering Center. The other three being the Thanatos, the Titan and the Mutant. It is also the only unit of the four that can be recruited without any additional research, making it more easily accessible.

Lucifers have an impressive 450 HP, which makes them capable of surviving at least 4 hits from an Infected Giant, not to mention lesser infected. Another notable bonus of Lucifers is that they regenerate their health at the rate of 40 HP/sec, making them usable faster after taking heavy damage.

Lucifers are surprisingly quiet, making only 10 noise per attack and being able to hit multiple infected each time they fire, and killing most of infected before they can make any noise. Their relatively large collision box also prevents them from stacking too much Noise on the same square.

Lucifers can pick up the barrels that are sometimes scattered around the map. A Lucifer that dies while carrying one of these barrels explodes, taking many nearby enemies with him.

Unfortunately Lucifers suffer from a number of disadvantages that make them a poor fit for defensive roles:

  • They are the only unit in the game that doesn't automatically fire over walls. They can be manually forced to do that, but the flames will damage walls. Wood walls take full damage, stone walls resist 50% of it. Traps are immune to fire, though.
  • They have extremely poor range and speed, making them vulnerable to Venoms. Un-massed, they also lack the burst damage to quickly kill Chubbies, thus making them vulnerable to almost all the specialised zombie units. It takes 26 venom shots to kill a Lucifer, but their ranged attacks can still interrupt regeneration.
  • Their Flamethrower attack can damage your own units and buildings, making them hard to mix with other types of units, since they might roast your own units if they get flanked or aren't controlled properly.
  • Finally they have the same cost and upkeep as the Thanatos unit. While both can attack several enemies at a time, Lucifer's short range and inability to attack through walls make him less versatile than Thanatos with his long-range bazooka during last wave.
Lucifer attacks through wall

Lucifer can be manually ordered to attack through walls. This will damage the walls.

Tips & Strategy[]

  • Their ability to deal with large numbers of Infected with small health pools simultaneously makes them most effective at clearing out Villages of Doom and holding unfortified areas against encroaching swarms.
  • Lucifers work best in small groups of 3-8 units, supported by snipers. Having less makes them vulnerable to flanking; having more makes their damage redundant.
  • They are a specialised unit against masses of low HP infected, thus Snipers help them massively with killing special zombies, where they fall short. Except for the Venoms, since they have a great resistance against their attacks and do them more damage than other special zombies.
  • While you might think Lucifers would work well with Soldiers, due to Soldier's resistance to fire damage, in reality the two tend to stack, both filling the purpose of killing close-range enemies. Meanwhile, Venoms and Chubbies will be left mostly uncountered. By contrast, combining Lucifers with Snipers simultaneously counters Snipers' weakness to being overwhelmed by large quantities of enemies, as well as Lucifers weakness to Chubbies and Venoms. Besides, Lucifers have shorter range than Snipers, so, when they are grouped in the same squad, Lucifers tend to run ahead, making any risk of friendly fire almost non-existent.
  • Rangers can kite runners into Lucifers' range, maximizing their DPS.
  • Use terrain features to make infected walk around corners into the fire cone.
  • Lucifers benefit greatly from Animation Canceling, which gives them ability to attack dozens of times per second.
  • Stakes Trap, Wire Fence Trap and Land Mine are immune to fire damage. Lucifer can be ordered to attack a trap to create a semi-permanent firewall.
